There’s a reason we’ve gone retro gaming, and it’s because Manchester has form…

Games have been played on Manchester computers for a very long time. In 1951, Dietrich Prinz wrote one of the earliest computer game programs, a chess program, for the Ferranti Mark 1 at the University of Manchester. That machine grew out of the Manchester Baby, the world’s first stored-program computer.

Thirty years later, the city was home to Ocean Software. Founded in Manchester in 1983 by David Ward and Jon Woods, Ocean became one of the biggest European game developers and publishers of the 1980s and 1990s. If you grew up with a ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 or Amstrad, there’s a good chance an Ocean game was in your collection: Daley Thompson’s Decathlon, Head over Heels, Batman, RoboCop and plenty more. The story carries on just down the road in Knutsford, where Traveller’s Tales went from Sonic 3D Blast to the hugely popular LEGO games.

Like those games, WordCamp Manchester is about playing together: no traditional talks, just a day where you choose your own adventure.

So insert your coin, press start, and we’ll see you on 6 November.

Player 2 has entered the game.

Famous games made in (or near) Manchester

Ocean Software (Manchester, 1983) was based in the city and often associated with licensed games, arcade conversions with a few original titles.

Notable Games

Daley Thompson’s Decathlon (1984): the famous joystick-waggler.

Batman (1986): an isometric adventure by Jon Ritman and Bernie Drummond.

Head over Heels (1987): Zzap!64 gave it 98%, and Your Sinclair named it its 1987 Spectrum Game of the Year.

RoboCop (1988): Ocean’s biggest hit.

Traveller’s Tales (Knutsford, Cheshire, 1989): were a late stage 16 bit developer who specialised in Disney and lego games, and worked closely with Sega.
